Meet the Coaches
Varsity Coach: Jim Bruno
Jim Bruno has been coaching the Good Counsel girls soccer for 24 years and has not
suffered a losing season. His career record is 359-90-42 through the 2010 season
with seven WCAC championships. In 1994, Jim was named the Washington Post’s All Met
coach of the year and in 1998 was named the National Private School Girls coach of
the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He was initiated
into the Good Counsel Hall of Fame in 2001 and was named the Maryland coach of the
year in 2002 and 2003 and 2009. He holds both the Premier Diploma and Advanced
National Diploma from the NSCAA.
Varsity Assistant Coach: Kevin Layton
Kevin Layton is the assistant coach for the Good Counsel varsity. Kevin holds both an A license from the USSF and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA. He currently is the assistant coach for the U15 MSC Elite and the U14 MSC Coyotees Green and White team. Kevin has been the Good Counsel Varsity Assistant coach for four years.
Varsity/Junior Varsity Assistant Coach: Sutherlanda Say
Sutherlanda Say is the assistant coach for the Good Counsel Varsity and Junior Varsity. Sutherlanda holds both an USSF National "A" license and is also a USSF State certified Referee. Say has coached and trained scores of top boys and girls travel teams. He has coached in the State ODP program ( 1990-2002) and an instructor for the State of Maryland Youth Soccer Licenses- D, E, F. He has also worked at many, many camps.
Varsity Assistant Coach: Fred Tamayo
Coach Tamayo has been associated with the varsity coach and team at Good Counsel for the past year. He holds both an "E" and "D" USSF License, and both an NSCAA Regional and Advanced Regional Diploma. He coached at Hoover Middle School and was assistant coach for the JV at Churchill High School. He has been involved in coaching/assistant coaching for both MSI Classic and WAGS teams for over 14 years for various girls’ teams ranging from U-10 to U-19, and was honored to receive the Coach's Award at MSI Stars & Stripes Tournament in 2002. He played in the Washington area from about 1962, played in Jr. High, was "All Metropolitan" while at Walt Whitman High School, and played for about 10 years in the US National Amateur League in Washington DC, and in 1969 helped the First Division British Lions FC win the National Amateur Challenge Cup (US Open Cup). He has played on various teams in the Montgomery County Recreational League for many years. Junior Varsity Coach: Bill Pizzano
Coach Bill Pizzano has over 30 years experience in soccer as both a player and a coach. Bill has been coaching girls for the past 18 years. During that time he led his club teams to 4 division championships, 2 second place finishes, 4 tournament titles, and 6 runner up tournament finishes. Bill coached the freshmen team for 7 years at Good Counsel High School prior to becoming the Junior Varsity head coach in 2009. He has his USSF “D” license and is a long time member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Bill has also served as a clinician in the MSI Player Development Program and performed coaching clinics for Montgomery Soccer Inc.
JV Assistant Coach: Angel Colbert
Angel Colbert joins the Good Counsel soccer staff this year after moving back to the area from Farmville Virginia. She grew up in Maryland and played DDP and for the Baltimore Football Club (now Baltimore Bays) Force, a D1 WAGS team. Angel also trained in Italy twice before and during her college career. Colbert is a 2006 graduate of Bridgewater College in Virginia, where she was a 4 year starter and 2 year captain. She also has her Master’s degree in Health & Human Performance and is a Certified Athletic Trainer. Colbert, her husband, and daughter currently reside in Damascus MD.
Freshman Coach: Luis Campos
Coach Luis’ experience goes back to El Salvador where he played soccer in
high school and two years in college. In the US, he played in two of the
Washington area local leagues for five years. He coached girls’ soccer at
Holton Arms School and he has had two successful years as the freshman coach
at Good Counsel.
Goalkeeper Coach: Walter Tombini
Walter is from Argentina and has played amature and proffessional soccer is Argentina, El Salvador, Guatamala and with the Washington Diplomats in the the APSL. Walter was the assistant boys caoch at Sandy Spring Friends School from 2002-2004, he has been the boys GK coach at Good Counsel since 2006. He was the GK coach for Real Maryland in 2008 and is the GK coach for Pachuca FC, USA. Walter has been coached by some of the best, like Ian Bain, John Ellinger and Silvino Gonzalo.
